At the table

Everything you need during play is on the session that's Up next, so you never have to leave it.

Getting there

Pick your campaign as Active in the sidebar. A link under it (▶ 3. The ferryman's warning) opens the session in one tap from anywhere. The Where we are card on the world's home page does the same: tap Up next.

Ticking beats

Tick a beat when it has happened. If the beat has handouts, Canopy asks first: Hand out and tick, Tick only or Cancel. Nothing reaches your players without you saying so.

If the players go another way, Skip the beat from its ⋯ menu. It folds away under Skipped, keeps its handouts to itself, and Unskip brings it back. A beat's Source (Ch5 p.122) shows next to its title, so the book is open at the right page.

A name you just made up

The box at the top of the session, Name, e.g. Brannoc, ferryman, writes it down in one step. Canopy makes a short article Brannoc with "ferryman" as its summary, and links it in a beat: one you've just added and haven't ticked yet (an Unplanned scene), or else the first beat you haven't ticked. The box says which beat before you press Enter, and when there are several you can choose another. You can pick another template or beat before pressing Enter. A name that already exists is linked, not written twice.

Handing something out

Hand out… gives your players something right now: an article, one of its secrets or a held-back passage. You can search by a secret's own title too. Only what's written is offered; when nothing matches, it says Nothing called … to hand out. Write it first. A sentence says exactly what they'll get, and a button for each choice sends it: Everyone, or one player by name. One tap hands it out to exactly who the button names; nothing goes out before. For more than one player but not everyone, tap Several…, tick them, and press Hand out. Everything handed out in a session is listed under it, each with a × to take it back.

Looking things up without leaving

Tap or click a name in the plan (or in the campaign notes above it):

  • On a laptop or wider, it opens in the side panel next to the plan. The panel also has Board (your research board) and Notes (the campaign notes). Find reads any article. Before you open anything, it lists the names in the current session.
  • On a phone or tablet, it opens in a sheet over the plan. Find at the top of the sheet looks up any other name in the same sheet. Close it with ×, or with your phone's Back button, to carry on.

Links inside open in the same place, with Back. Ctrl-click (⌘-click) still opens the full page.

A place on a map shows a small map in the panel or the sheet: tap it to open the map right there, centred on the place (see Maps).

Table mode

On a tablet or laptop, Table mode (on the tabs row) hides the sidebar and the campaign's details, so the session gets the whole screen. Done or Esc leaves it.

To look up a name that isn't in the plan, press Find next to Done (or Ctrl K / ⌘ K): it opens in the sheet or the side panel, and you stay in Table mode.

Showing the map to your players

A map you open in Table mode has a See as player switch above it. Turn it on and the map shows exactly what one player gets: their pins, the players' picture, no notes. Pick the player next to it. That's their own copy of the map, the same one their phone gets, so you can turn the tablet round or cast it to the TV without giving away a secret. Turn it off for your own map again. Canopy remembers it for the campaign, and who you picked, on this device.

Playing on two devices

If the campaign was changed on another device since this one last looked (a laptop and a tablet at the same table), a tick you make is put on the newer version and saved, so it isn't lost. Other changes can't be merged that way: Canopy loads the newer version and asks you to make your change again.
