What's changed
What each version of Canopy brought, newest first. You have Canopy v0.86.0. Fixes that came out after a version are listed under it.
Canopy v0.86
2 November 2026
- Canopy is early in development, and new accounts are by invitation for now. If you don't have an invite, the start page now offers Join the waitlist: join with Google in one tap, or with your email address and the link we mail you. Signing in to an account you already have is right below.
- Would you rather just hear when Canopy opens? A line under the waitlist takes you to Hear when Canopy opens.
- Roads you draw on a map now fill their route's From, To and Along the way: every settlement the road passes, each with how far along the road it is, so How far to… works between any of them. If the route's article already says something else, Canopy shows both and asks: Use the map's or Keep the article's. The road's card asks again whenever you change the road later.
- A road can now end on another road: while drawing, tap on a road and yours joins it there, no settlement needed.
- Where roads meet there is now a crossroads, a small ring both roads share. Tap it to Make it a settlement (both roads then stop at the new village) or Add a label. Two roads that only cross meet once you tap where they cross and choose Make a crossroads.
- You can change a road's way without drawing it again: tap it in Places → Road and choose Change the way, then drag a stop, take one out, carry the road on, or draw a stretch again by hand. Save road keeps it, Cancel puts it back.
- After you add a road or a settlement while drawing a map, its card offers the next step: Draw another road (it keeps the same kind) or Place another settlement, and Back to the tools. Naming a river, lake or forest ends with Back to the tools.
- The list beside a map is now called On this map, with buttons to jump to its pins, roads, rivers and lakes, and areas. Tap a road to see all of it on the map.
- Taking a road off a map, or a name off a river, lake or forest, now says what it took, with Undo, which puts it back with its bends and bridges.
- A road whose settlement is no longer on the map is listed first under Roads with what's wrong, and its card offers to end the road where that settlement was. Only you see it.
- After you reload a drawn map, its towns, roads and the outlines of the maps inside it show again. A road between towns that sit on a map inside it keeps its From and To.
- Bridges and fords no longer look oversized when you zoom out of a map.
- On detail maps, rivers no longer run along the edge of a lake.
Canopy v0.85
2 November 2026
- Suggest biomes now gives forest, not desert, to land among many lakes far from the sea.
Fixed since
- The invite page mentions the privacy page once instead of twice.
- A road you're drawing on a map is no longer lost when you choose Done or another tool before Finish road: the form to name it opens instead.
Canopy v0.84
2 November 2026
- Players can write too. Your own character, and any page your game master asks you to write, wait in your campaign under Your pages, with Write it or Edit. Write as much or as little as you like.
- Game masters: ask a player to write a page with Ask a player to write this… in its share box, or Ask a player… on To write. The bell tells you when they've written. Other players see the page only once you share it, and GM notes never reach the player who writes it.
- A page now says who wrote it ("Written by"), and Credits names every player with the pages they wrote.
- New worlds are now made in your account, so they open on your phone, tablet and laptop and you can invite players to them. To start one, sign in. Without an account you can still look around the sample world.
- Nothing you already made goes away. Worlds kept in this browser are listed on the start page under Only in this browser, and a world in a folder still opens with Continue with and the folder's name. They open and save as before. Inside one, Copy to your account puts a copy in your account (sign in first; an account keeps up to three worlds), and Download as zip saves it as files you keep.
- Water on maps now shows its depth: light in the shallows and dark in the deep, lakes included. Three thin shore lines follow every coast, and lakes get a coast line like the sea's. On maps of an area inside your world, gentle shores get a sand beach and steep ones stone. Land you paint Snow and ice freezes the shallow sea beside it.
- Rivers now bend smoothly instead of turning in steps. On a map of an area inside your world, a river ends at the map's edge instead of running along it.
- On area and town maps, rivers show white-water rapids where they run steeply and a waterfall where they drop over a cliff. They come from your heights: make the drop steeper and you get a waterfall. Players see the new coasts, rapids and falls in the map pictures you share.
- On a river you named, players see its waterfalls and rapids only once they have the river's article, like the river itself.
- Maps you already drew look a little different the next time you open them: the water shows its depth, gentle coasts get beaches, rivers bend smoothly, and the beige band on low land is gone, so it is green down to the water. Your heights and everything you placed stay the same.
- The privacy page now says that Canopy writes down its totals each night and keeps them. They never name anyone.
- The privacy page now says that if Canopy changes your Canopy Plus, signs you out everywhere or mails you about deleting your account, it keeps a note of it. Deleting your account deletes it.
- The privacy page now says that Canopy counts how often each invite link is opened, per day. It doesn't keep who opened it, their internet address or their device.
Canopy v0.83
1 November 2026
- Stops along a route: add the villages, inns and fords on a road under Along the way, each with how far along it is, so a long road can stay one route. How far to… now goes to and from any stop, and players only see the stops shared with them.
- Pins from other maps: a pin for an article now shows on the maps above and below the one it's placed on, at the same spot. On a busy map, pins from a map inside appear as you zoom in. Pins lists them under From other maps, and the pin's card says which map it's placed on.
- Move a pin on any drawn map it shows on: press, hold and drag. It's kept on the most detailed map that holds its new spot, and Undo puts it back. A pin on a picture map, or on a map inside one, moves only on its own map.
- Players see a pin from another map only when its article is shared with them, and see that map's name only when the map is shared with them too.
- Rock, cliffs and snow: steep and craggy ground on your drawn map now turns to bare grey rock, with paler scree below it. Snow lies on high ground, and comes lower the further you are from the equator. Area and town maps also draw cliffs along steep edges. Rock and snow show when Terrain colours is on, and your players see them as you do.
- Suggest biomes, a new button in the Biome tool: one tap fills the land you haven't painted with forest, jungle, grassland, desert, tundra, marsh, and snow and ice, from how high the land is, where your rivers run and how far it is from the equator. Your own painting stays, and one Undo takes it all back.
- What's changed: a new last chapter in Help lists what each version of Canopy brought, newest first. Tap the version number (Canopy v…) at the bottom of the World menu, a player's sidebar or the start page to open it, or See what's new when a new version is ready.
- A big family's tree no longer opens with the children cut off. It opens on as much of the family as you can read, or as the List when the tree is too wide, with a line saying why. Tree always draws the whole family.
- Bringing notes in is called Import everywhere, and the import window says how many notes go into which world.
- The date poll has a way back to your page, and the game master's bell says each time a player answers it.
- Smaller fixes: dates read "Mon 2 Nov" everywhere; Esc in the @ list now takes the @ away in the article editor too; Later passages show a grey label and a bar instead of ">" marks while you write; and Hand out only offers articles that are already written.
Canopy v0.82
31 October 2026
- Buildings: a Location can now be a Building (an inn, a temple, a smithy) with an Owner. Towns, districts and other places list their Buildings on their own page, apart from Places within, and you can add them right there with Add › Buildings. A character lists the buildings they own under Owns.
- Add several… for beats: paste chapters one per line under a session or Unscheduled, with the page after a comma, and they become beats with their Source and @ links in one go.
- Long writing sessions stay smooth on a phone: your draft is kept in the short pauses while you type.
- An article's share box now sits under its title on every screen, so it stays in view however long the sidebar list is; the sidebar copy is gone.
- A Canopy tab left open on another device now picks up what you've read on your phone when you press Check for new things, so the green New box matches on every device.
- On a phone the editor's toolbar takes two rows instead of hiding buttons off the edge: Later, GM only, Undo and Redo are always in sight.
- Download as zip keeps your folders: each article goes in its own folder, so an Obsidian vault comes back the shape you gave it. Older zips still open as before.
- Coming back to Canopy now brings in what your game master shared while you were away: no need to press Check for new things.
- Paint forests, marshes, fields and deserts on a drawn map, in the map editor's new Biome tool.
- Name a forest: give a forest, marsh or any painted land a name tied to its article. Players see the name once they have the article.
Canopy v0.81
31 October 2026
- An article's Contents box now shows headings with "&" and other special characters as you wrote them.
Fixed since
- Canopy no longer shows the name from your Google account: everyone chooses the name their game master and other players see, and can change it with Change name.
Canopy v0.80
31 October 2026
- You can ask for your account to be deleted. Canopy first mails you how to keep a copy of your worlds, and the privacy page says how it works.
- Mail about your account now comes from Canopy's info address, and replies to it reach us.
- While you draw a map, your places show on the globe and the flat map as they do on the map, in the secret colour if no player has them yet.
- In the map maker, the forms for a new settlement, road or river open where the tools are, so the map stays in view, and a ring marks the spot you tapped.
- Settlements, roads and named rivers and lakes now work in the map maker: place, move and name them while you draw. Hills on the sample map are gentler.
Canopy v0.79
30 October 2026
- Canopy now asks about news once: on one day after you've made a world, a quiet note under your worlds offers Keep me posted or No thanks, and a No is final. Nobody is added without saying yes.
- Right after Join the waitlist, you can ask for news while you wait, with one tap.
- The manual, About Canopy and Privacy now have their own addresses (canopy.quest/help/maps) that you can bookmark, send and find on search engines.
- If something goes wrong, Canopy can put a world kept in your account back to how it was at any moment in the last 30 days, pictures included. For this, deleted and replaced pictures are kept out of sight for 30 days.
- On a drawn map, draw roads tied to a Route (track, road or highway), with bridges and fords where they cross a river. Tap a bridge to make it a ford or to name it. Players see a road once they have its route.
- Name a river or a lake on a drawn map and tie it to an article. A named river is drawn by Canopy, so players only see it, and its name, once they have its article.
Fixed since
- Find a date: each month's name now sits right above its first day in the calendar. November's days were showing under "October".
- "About Canopy Plus" now opens the Canopy Plus part of the manual, not the top of Getting started.
- Search results in Help now open at the matching section.
- A campaign's tab follows the address: Back, Forward and a changed address open the right tab.
- Players' copies of a campaign no longer carry the names of pages they weren't given: a link to such a page reaches them as its words alone, and a map picture is described by the map's name.
- Start a campaign on the home page's next step and in the handbook now opens the name box straight away, and an empty Campaigns page no longer shows the Shelf.
- Importing never quietly drops part of a note any more: if Canopy can't read the fields at the top of a note (often a value that needs quotes), the import names it with the line, and Canopy never saves over that part.
- A campaign whose file can't be read says so on its page, shows the file, and lets you fix it there.
- A field that starts with a
[[link]]followed by more text, as Obsidian notes often have, now reads as text. - What you type while an old "Restore them?" banner is showing is now always kept as a draft; before, Restore could bring back older text. The older draft stays on offer until you restore or discard it, and Restore swaps the two instead of losing either.
- Drafts are now kept at least every few seconds while you type without a pause.
- Share boxes now list a player who just joined, without opening the campaign page first.
- Naming a river or lake on a drawn map with New article makes a place (a natural feature, or a location), never a character.
- A map inside a drawn map that you rename in the map editor keeps its new name after Done.
Canopy v0.78
29 October 2026
- A privacy page at canopy.quest/privacy says what Canopy keeps and counts, who sees it, how long it's kept, and how to have your account deleted. The start page, the sign-in box and Help link to it.
- Report a problem: signed in, tell us what went wrong from the World menu, a player's menu, Help or an error message. The form shows exactly what goes along; nothing from your world unless you tick the page's address.
- On a drawn map, towns and villages show as settlements: a symbol by size with the name on the map, picked under Settlement size when you add a pin and kept in the article's Size. Grow or shrink it on a settlement asks before it changes the article.
- On a drawn map, an article is pinned once across the map and its areas' maps: Canopy says where it already is, with Show it. Pins only you have show in the secret colour.
- The sample world's map of the Thornmere valley is now drawn in Canopy's own map maker, in place of AI placeholder art. The players' version still leaves out the sluice gates and the sluice line under the water.
- New accounts on canopy.quest now come through an invite link, or a player's campaign link. Existing accounts and campaign links work as before.
- Someone who signs in with Google without an invite can join a waitlist.
Fixed since
- A link to a page that doesn't exist now shows a proper page with a way back to the start page.
- Search engines can now find and describe Canopy's start page properly.
Canopy v0.77
28 October 2026
- Canopy has a new logo: a C with a canopy and roots. It shows on the start page, the About page, the browser tab and the home-screen icon, and in link previews.
- At the table, See as player on a map shows exactly one player's map, so you can turn the tablet or cast it without spoilers.
- Players see The map changed under New since you last looked, the map fills their phone and works sideways, and a pin only opens when there's something to read.
Fixed since
- Players can open a campaign of a big world again: a world of thousands of articles no longer ends in "Canopy's server couldn't finish that."
- Joining with an invite link works as well on a big world as on a small one.
Canopy v0.76
28 October 2026
- Maps inside maps: put a town map inside a region map, with its outline on the map above, breadcrumbs and Up, for every map.
- Each area of a drawn world map made with Map this area becomes a map of its own, with its own picture and pins; maps drawn before get theirs with one tap.
- Add a session to your calendar: Add to calendar and Share invite give an .ics file with the campaign's name and the time; changing the date updates the event.
- Players see the next session's day and time on their page, with their own Add to calendar.
- About Canopy: a new page where Hyperion, who makes Canopy, tells why it's called Canopy, how it started, and what it promises you. The start page links to it under the title ("Read about Canopy"), and it is also in the World menu and a player's sidebar. It opens without signing in.
- Draw a world map: New map now offers to draw one in Understory, Canopy's map maker. You draw land and sea, mountains, hills and rivers on a globe or a flat map, press Save, and it becomes a map like any other, ready for pins.
- A map drawn this way has Edit the map at the top. Saving again redraws its picture, and every pin stays where it was.
- Players only ever get the map's picture, never the world it was drawn from.
Fixed since
- Calendar invites update the event even after a time edited by hand.
Canopy v0.75
28 October 2026
- The world book can be saved as an EPUB, for reading on a tablet or e-reader, with its contents, links and pictures.
Fixed since
- Opening a world and players' pages is quicker: each world keeps its own list of pictures.
- Pins that are only a name are now grey instead of brown, so they no longer look like a secret on the map.
- Maps you make with Map this area show on the globe now; tap a map's name to open it again.
Canopy v0.74
28 October 2026
- Signed in, get news about Canopy in one tap from the start page, and stop it there too.
Fixed since
- After Stop news on the start page, the News from Canopy section now says "News stopped. You won't get news at … any more." instead of quietly going back to the sign-up text.
Canopy v0.73
28 October 2026
- Leave your email on the start page to hear when Canopy opens; we email a link to confirm first.
Canopy v0.72
28 October 2026
- Draw a world map in Maps, with Canopy Plus: shape land and sea, mountains and rivers yourself; changes are kept as you draw and reach your players at Done.
- A drawn map also keeps its heights as a plain grey picture that other map makers can read, says which pins the new land put in the sea, and can take its last change back.
Canopy v0.71
28 October 2026
- Understory, Canopy's map maker, opens on its own at canopy.quest/understory for Canopy Plus accounts; maps made there are kept in your account.
Canopy v0.70
27 October 2026
- Big worlds open much faster, and show how many articles they've read while they open.
- Searching a big world stays quick, even when nothing matches.
Canopy v0.69
27 October 2026
- Routes between places: a new Route template, Roads and routes on every place, and Add a route in a few taps. A route can take a set time (a ferry, a zipline) and be only for some ways of travelling.
- How far to… on a place finds the quickest chain of routes and says how many days it takes, on foot, on horseback or by ship, at the pace you choose.
- Travel settings for your world's unit, speeds, terrain and paces. Players only ever travel the routes you shared with them.
Canopy v0.68
24 October 2026
- A more modern atlas look: an article's key is a tinted band instead of a framed box, kinds on the start page get small swatches, and the timeline has tinted eras with round marks.
- The Atlas theme now uses Source Serif 4.
Fixed since
- Opening Canopy over http now takes you to the secure https address.
Canopy v0.67
24 October 2026
- A new look, like an atlas: the start page lists every template with its first articles in columns, articles open with a framed key of portrait and facts, and the timeline shows each era as a band with its name beside its events.
- The player page, primer and handbook get the same structure: what's happening first, then what to read, sorted by kind.
- A new built-in theme, Atlas (sea and forest), and Alegreya as a typeface for your own themes.
Fixed since
- On phones, the menu no longer lets the page behind it scroll: the list in the menu keeps scrolling wherever you swipe.
Canopy v0.66
24 October 2026
- A calmer look: rows instead of tiles on the start page, no coloured side stripes, sentence case labels and small squared tags.
- Laptops and big screens use their width: a wider side column on articles (three columns on big screens), the campaign facts beside the story, and the player page, handbook and primer laid out side by side.
- On phones, an article's portrait sits beside its facts so the text starts on the first screen.
Fixed since
- Joining a campaign with an invite link no longer fails on a big world.
- When something goes wrong, the join page now says so once, in plain words: "Canopy's server couldn't finish that. Try again in a moment." If you joined but the campaign didn't open, it tells you you've joined.
Canopy v0.65
23 October 2026
- The date poll link now shows how many players have answered and, on each date, how many are free, so players can see which dates are shaping up. The one or two leading dates are outlined, and it says when everyone is free. Numbers only, never who.
Fixed since
- The theme list no longer opens off the edge of the screen on phones (start, join and date-poll pages). It now opens towards the side with room, and downwards when there's no room above.
Canopy v0.64
21 October 2026
- To write now lists articles you've started that are still short (under 50 words), sortable by most linked, recently edited, shortest or A to Z.
- Mark a short article It's finished on the list or its page to take it off; it's saved as
finished: truein the file.
Canopy v0.63
20 October 2026
- New premade Culture template: a way of life apart from species, with its species, homeland, languages and faith. Characters and factions can name their culture, and species list their cultures.
- Template fields can now link to several articles, such as a culture's Species.
Canopy v0.62
20 October 2026
- A Later passage can wait for an event: players get it once their campaign is past the end of that event, and you see which date that is.
Canopy v0.61
20 October 2026
- Coming back to a world in your account (back to the tab, unlocking your phone) only loads what changed on your other devices, not the whole world again, so it's quick even for a big world.
Canopy v0.60
20 October 2026
- A title can put a word before its holder's name: Before the name: Duke makes Aldren Vey Duke Aldren Vey in headings, lists, fields, the family tree, the organisation chart and search, and Aldren Vey, Duke of Thornmere on hover cards, while he holds it. Players only see it once they know he holds it.
Fixed since
Canopy's old address now takes you to canopy.quest, on the same page. If this browser keeps worlds or unsaved drafts at the old address, you stay there and a note explains how to bring them over.
Canopy v0.59
20 October 2026
- New Title template: titles like Head Ranger or Duke of Thornmere, with a kind of title, holders over time, next in line, and Add → Title on a person's page.
- Ruled by, Leader and other fields about someone can name a title and show who holds it. The organisation chart shows each group's titles with their holder, or vacant.
- Players only see the holders they have, as of their campaign's present day.
Canopy v0.58
20 October 2026
- An empty "More to come" handout no longer counts as New or raises the bell until it has something to read.
- The green New marks on released paragraphs now follow your account, so a new phone or a laptop shows them too.
- See as a player now shows the bell and New marks as they'd see them.
Canopy v0.57
20 October 2026
- Hand out, Share and Release send in one tap: a button for Everyone and one for each player, each giving exactly who it names; Several… for more than one player.
- The family tree opens fitted and centred on a tablet, and a new campaign opens on its Sessions.
- In To write, It's one I wrote… points a misspelt name at the article you meant, and the primer reads in the order you shared things.
Fixed since
- An era in a history can start on a day or in a month ("3 Highsun 120 LA"), and Canopy counts its years from there. Dates never show "Infinity" any more.
- The date boxes on Calendar and histories all take a year, a month or a day, and say under them how Canopy reads what you wrote.
- Typing a Source on a new beat no longer clears its title and text.
- A new beat on the Shelf stays in view after Save.
Canopy v0.56
19 October 2026
- The date poll's "Everyone free" now counts only the campaign's players and waits for all of them. Answers from anyone else with the link are shown apart.
- Players see an open poll on their page and under the bell, and can change their answer there. A poll without suggested dates comes one week at a time on a phone.
- "Plan next session" is now "Find a date", shown once the campaign has a session.
Fixed since
- A GM-only or Later passage in a file written on Windows no longer reaches players.
- A GM-only quote inside a list item is now kept from players too.
- Markers typed by hand inside a list item ("Only for you", "Later: …", "GM only") are kept from players too.
- A Later passage whose quote marks have extra spaces between them no longer reaches players.
Canopy v0.55
19 October 2026
- Factions have 23 variants now, from Realm and Noble house to Pirates and Family business, and a religious order links to its deity.
- A Realm can ask who rules and how they came to power, and its Ideas button offers ways a realm can be ruled, best matches first. Your own words always win.
Canopy v0.54
18 October 2026
- Plan the next session: ask players when they're free with a link (no account needed), see which dates suit most of them, and pick one; it goes on the next session.
Canopy v0.53
18 October 2026
- A faction can be Part of another one: an Empire, its Imperial Army, the Third Legion within it. A faction lists its Groups within.
- Organisation chart: once a faction has groups within it (or is part of one), its page links to a chart of the whole organisation, with who leads each group and how many members it has. It reads top to bottom on a phone and prints.
- Secret groups stay secret: players only get the groups you've shared with them. A group they don't have is left out of their chart and lists, with every group within it, until you share it. Share each group right from the chart, and use Show to see the chart as a campaign's players do.
- The sample world shows it: House Vey with the Heron Guard, the Lake Watch, the Household of Ivy Hall, and the Grey Feathers, a hidden order with a cell of divers. Also the Old Town, a district of Thornmere ruined in the Drowning.
Canopy v0.52
18 October 2026
- Locations can say when they were Founded and when they Fell, and how: Ruined, Destroyed or Abandoned. Tap Founded and fell in the Add line of a location's page.
- The page says how long ago: Founded 312 AK, 1,240 years ago, Ruined 912 AK, 640 years ago.
- An event set in a place after it fell happens in the ruins of it (or at the remains of, in abandoned), on the event's page and on the timeline.
- The timeline shows when places were founded and fell, and in To scale a bar for the years they stood.
- Your own templates that count as places get it too.
Fixed since
- Fields an article has that aren't part of its template (like an imported "Created by", or a property added in Obsidian) can now be changed or removed: edit the article, they're under Other fields.
- These fields no longer reach players at all. Before, the page hid them, but they were still in the player's copy of the world.
Canopy v0.51
17 October 2026
- Places link to places: a location's Part of, a character's Home, a faction's Seat, an event's Place, a handout's Found at and similar fields now list locations, natural features and planes. A town can lie in a mountain range.
- Locations have a new variant, District, for a quarter of a town.
- Items have a Kept at field, and a place lists what's Kept here.
- A natural feature now lists its inhabitants, events and what's kept there.
- A template's link field can be set to link to Places.
- Your own templates have a Counts as setting: People, Places or Neither (the default). A homebrew Dragon can then rule a city; a Temple can hold a relic.
Canopy v0.50
17 October 2026
- A city can be ruled by a god: Ruled by, a faction's Leader, an item's Owner, a document's Written by and a handout's From now list people, meaning your characters and your deities (and any template of yours with a family of its own, like a Dragon). Each name says which kind it is.
- A deity's page shows what it rules, leads, owns and wrote, like a character's.
- A template's link field can be set to link to People.
Canopy v0.49
13 October 2026
- The article page and sidebar are tidier on laptop screens.
Fixed since
- A pin linked to an article no longer shows its name twice.
- A pin that's just a name has Write it: it makes a location of that name, links the pin to it and opens it to write. If the article already exists, the pin is linked to it.
- Picking an article for a name-only pin in Change pin replaces the old name instead of keeping it as a label.
- Share: ticking a player unticks Everyone.
Canopy v0.48
13 October 2026
- Add members to a faction from the faction's own page, one after the other, including people not written yet.
- The same works for a place's inhabitants and a species' known members.
Fixed since
- A child added under Edit family gets their parent's spouse or partner as the other parent too, when there's just one.
Canopy v0.47
13 October 2026
- Timelines get histories: The world plus a history per people, faction or faith, each with its own eras, and chips to see one at a time or side by side. Calendars and points of view become histories, with nothing lost.
- Events say whose history they're part of with one tap in their When box; players get only the histories their campaign shares.
Canopy v0.46
13 October 2026
- Small pages stay small: empty born/died, timeline and family wait in one quiet Add line, and a secret's hidden family tie and a beat's Source open when you ask for them.
- Players see this recap stands out more under the recap, and still starts off.
- The editor toolbar no longer gets clipped on a phone.
Canopy v0.45
13 October 2026
- A world for writing no longer offers the Handout template, and importing notes asks what the world is for.
- The editor shows the article's title, its top bar no longer lets text show through, and Later asks in Canopy's own box and shows held-back passages with a quiet label.
Canopy v0.44
13 October 2026
- Beats, recaps and GM notes show linked names as names while you type, not as link code; Backspace after a name removes it whole.
- Esc on the @ list leaves plain words instead of a stray @.
Canopy v0.43
13 October 2026
- Hidden family tie uses the same person picker as Edit family: Enter takes the highlighted person, and a new name says "not written yet".
- A family tree printed without "Fit on one page" starts under the title and breaks between generations.
- Siblings can be added before their parents are known.
Fixed since
- Calendars: a counting-down era says why it has no length, the four-seasons reset is tucked under More, the Of box fits its text, and the page no longer scrolls sideways on phones.
- The When box says Until is the day something is over, and names its last day.
- The timeline list keeps each date on one line and gives dates more room on wide screens.
- The start page greets readers as readers: "Groups you read in" and "Help for readers", apart from campaigns you play in.
- Previews and summaries on player and reader pages show linked names as plain words, without
[[ ]]. - Notices about fields left out for players use the fields' own names, and say that points of view stay with you.
- Renaming a world in World settings shows in the sidebar straight away.
- Zeros in dates and numbers no longer have a slash, on screen and in print.
Canopy v0.42
13 October 2026
- The world book downloads for Word, with headings for Word's navigation, a contents page with page numbers and numbered pages.
- The world book has a cover with the world's description and the author's name, and printed pages are numbered.
- Notes from your own folders get a section each in the world book instead of landing under "Other"
Canopy v0.41
13 October 2026
- Players' characters no longer show up in To write as names you owe. They wait in their own small group, "Your players' characters".
- Write it carries a board card's note into the new article as an "Only for you" line, and a name jotted at the table goes into the beat you just added, or the first one not ticked yet.
- Picking an @ name that starts with the word you just typed ("The @Wight") no longer doubles that word.
Canopy v0.40
13 October 2026
- Players see the paragraphs new on a page they already had marked New, so they don't have to reread it all.
- A handout with nothing to read yet shows as a greyed "More to come" card; the small map on an article shows its name while the picture loads.
- Renaming a session keeps "Handed out in session N" on what was handed out in it.
Fixed since
- Typing on an empty template heading, such as Notable places in a new Location, now writes on the line below instead of into the heading.
- The editor's Preview leaves out empty template headings, like the article page.
- "New since you last looked", the bell count and New badges now show as soon as a player opens their campaign, not only after visiting a page first.
Canopy v0.39
13 October 2026
- In a long campaign, older played sessions gather under one Show N played sessions line on the Sessions tab, so the plan comes first.
Canopy v0.38
12 October 2026
- Tapping an event on the timeline to scale opens a card over the timeline (summary, fields, Open page, Edit), so you keep your zoom and place.
- Try a date on the Calendars page says where a date falls: its year in the era and how long until the next one, countdown eras included.
Fixed since
- Pictures in the player view load faster: the phone keeps them and only checks they're still allowed.
- A map's picture with your markings never reaches players, even when you show it in a shared article: they get the players' version instead, in See as player too.
- Editing an article on two devices no longer loses work: when the other device saved first, Canopy shows what it changed and lets you choose Keep both, Use mine or Use theirs.
- Importing a world whose name you already have says so, and names the new one "Thornmere (2)" unless you keep the name.
- Download as zip names the zip and its folder after the world, capitals and spaces kept.
Canopy v0.37
12 October 2026
- Release on the Players tab's Held back list now asks who gets the passage first, everyone or chosen players, like every other share; nothing goes out until you press Release.
Canopy v0.36
12 October 2026
- Research board: Find on the board narrows the board to cards whose name, template or note matches, and template chips show one kind at a time. Filtering only hides cards; your board stays as it is.
Fixed since
- Opening a world or a campaign is a little faster.
- Every place in a link field's list shows what it is: its variant, or else its own kind (such as Castle), and the sample world's places have fitting variants.
- Names in a link field's list are no longer cut short to make room for the hint next to them.
Canopy v0.35
12 October 2026
- Set the order of the primer: drag articles or use the arrows in the Players tab's Primer list; players read it in that order.
Canopy v0.34
12 October 2026
- Share maps with players: pins follow their articles, other pins are handed out one by one from the session or a beat, and a players' version of the picture keeps what's drawn for you alone off their phones.
- Players see their campaign's maps on their page, tap a place for its summary, and find new places under "New since you last looked".
- The sample campaign shares the Thornmere Valley map and hands out the Sunken Chapel later on.
Canopy v0.33
12 October 2026
- Todos in articles: write a line starting with
- [ ]and it shows up in To write; tick it there or on the article's page. Players and readers never get todos.
Canopy v0.32
12 October 2026
- Built-in templates (Character, Location, Faction, Species, Deity, Event, Item, Document, Handout and the plain Article) are now Canopy's own: the same in every world, so every world gets their improvements.
- Switch off a built-in template your world doesn't need under Templates → In this world; its articles keep working. Your own templates stay fully yours.
Canopy v0.31
12 October 2026
- Pictures in articles: a Picture button in the editor, and portraits, crests and place pictures as fields, shown full size with their credits.
- Pictures are sorted into groups (Portraits, Crests and banners, Places, Maps, Handouts, your own).
- Players only ever load pictures that something they were given uses.
Canopy v0.30
12 October 2026
- Maps for the GM: a picture with pins for places, labels like room numbers, notes and page references. Find pins in a searchable list, put a place on a map from its page, and open the map from a session, in Table mode too.
Fixed since
- A link field only suggests the kind of article it links to: a Character's Faction lists factions, Home lists locations. Typing narrows the list, and if nothing fits, New faction "…" writes it for you.
- The suggestions are Canopy's own list under the field, instead of the browser's grey one, and work at phone size with the keyboard up.
- In Templates, a link field has Links to: a kind of article, or Anything.
Canopy v0.29
12 October 2026
- A world for writing a book or a series now shows nothing for games: private notes instead of GM notes, hidden truths instead of secrets, the author instead of a game master, and no sessions, beats, research board or table mode.
- Readers replaces Campaigns in a world for writing: groups of beta readers or an editor, each with an invite link, an introduction, what they may read, held-back passages, notes they share and "Read as a reader".
- Readers who join by invite see the author's words too: no characters, sessions or player handbook, but a reader's copy.
- Sample for writers on the start page: Thornmere as the setting of a short story, What the Ferryman Saw. On the night of the Drowning, the Duke's daughter asks the old ferryman to row her and a stranger out to the drowned chapel. The world's private notes are in an author's words, and a group of beta readers has read the story but doesn't know yet who Wren is.
Fixed since
- Players no longer receive eras that begin after their campaign's present day, how long the current era lasts, or the world's own present day when it's later than theirs.
- Points of view, with their names for events and their accounts, stay with the GM.
Canopy v0.28
12 October 2026
- You can keep three worlds in your account; the start page says so before you start a fourth. Worlds on this device don't count.
- Pictures can be up to 20 MB each.
Canopy v0.27
12 October 2026
- Pictures: add maps, portraits and handouts to a world from your phone or computer, with credits for every one (made by me, commissioned, licensed or AI placeholder). Pictures are in the World menu, on the Credits page and in the zip download, and photos lose their hidden location details.
- Importing an Obsidian vault or a folder of notes now keeps its pictures, each ready for its credits.
Canopy v0.26
12 October 2026
- What's new: a bell at the top of the screen (in the top bar on a phone, next to the world's name on a tablet or laptop) with a count of what's new.
- Game masters see when a player joins one of their campaigns, or shares a note with them. Tap one to go to that campaign's Players tab.
- Players see what their game master gave them since they last looked, the same list as on their page.
Canopy v0.25
12 October 2026
- Players see New since you last looked at the top of their page, and New or Updated next to primer pages, handouts and secrets. A page counts as updated when the game master releases a part of it or the campaign reaches a date that reveals more. Your account remembers what you've seen, so your phone and laptop agree.
- Check for new things says so when there's nothing new yet.
- Things handed out during play show the session they came from: "Handed out in session 3".
- Sharing or handing out an article that players would open empty now shows a clear warning first. Players who open an empty page get a friendly line and a way back to their page.
- A new For players chapter in Help, reachable from Help for players in the player's menu and on the start page.
- Someone who only plays sees Back to your campaigns instead of "Back to your worlds".
- Going to Canopy's bare address shows your list of campaigns instead of reopening the last one.
Canopy v0.24
12 October 2026
- New premade template Natural feature for the land itself, with thirty-one variants from Archipelago to Waterfall: rivers, mountain ranges, lakes, seas, glaciers, caves, reefs and more. Most variants simply say what the feature is; a few add fields, such as a river's Rises in and Flows into. A feature lists the places, rivers and creatures within it, and a Location lists its natural features.
- In Templates, variants now fold up to their name, so a template with many variants stays short on a phone. Add a premade variant offers the premade ones as a list.
Canopy v0.23
12 October 2026
- A new article starts as a plain Article, unless you start it from a template on the start page or a name pinned under People. It no longer reuses the last template you picked.
- Next: invite your players goes away once a player has joined.
- When nobody has joined yet, Everyone in the campaign is already chosen, so Share works straight away.
- Share a secret puts the cursor in its search box.
- The editor's Preview shows Only for you lines the way the article does.
- The secret form says under each title: Players see this title when you share the secret.
- Plainer words: Hidden family tie in the secret form, Calendars (was "Calendars and perspectives") and Points of view on the timeline settings.
- Importing notes shows how far it has got, and writes a few files at a time, so it's faster.
Canopy v0.22
11 October 2026
- Dates can go down to the day ("3 Thaw 298 LA"), and Until can say how long something lasted ("40 days").
- Born and Died are real dates: characters show their age ("Age 54 now"), births, deaths and lifespans show on the timeline, and events list who was alive and how old.
- Gentle notes when dates don't add up, such as a child born before a parent; players never see a death before it happens in their campaign.
Fixed since
- A person is one life: a character's When that starts at their birth gives their death and age, and they show on the timeline once. "Check dates" no longer flags partners or distant mentions, and To scale shows names on lives again.
- The world book prints each character's birth, death, age and family, and events' dates. Trees and books printed without secrets show the official parent as plain fact, and tree boxes show the years in full.
@suggests the names pinned on your research board and the rest of the To write list, on any word of the name, and Enter picks the highlighted one. Write it on a name pinned under People starts a Character (Places: a Location), and To write shows the board card's note.- At the table: a beat tick is no longer lost when another device saved first; Table mode on a tablet has Find; Back on a phone closes the name sheet; names in the sample's campaign notes open in the sheet.
- Delete an article from its page. Canopy first shows what it touches (links, family, campaigns and what players have) and asks before deleting. Links to it stay, as not written yet.
- Reloading, or opening a saved link to an article or campaign, opens that page again instead of the list of worlds.
- The sidebar keeps its place after saving and reloading, and long campaign names no longer push its buttons past the edge.
- Text typed onto a template heading is no longer hidden from the page.
- Pressing Enter twice at the end of a Later or GM only passage now ends it, so your next paragraph isn't hidden by accident; GM only pressed just after a passage starts a new one instead of nesting in it.
Canopy v0.21
11 October 2026
- Print a world book: every article as one book with contents and working links, with or without your GM notes and secrets.
- Player handbook: everything a player has been given, as one book to print or save as a PDF, built from exactly what they see.
- Family trees get print options: a title, dates on boxes, fit on one page, and printing without secrets or for a campaign's players.
Canopy v0.20
11 October 2026
- The world's home now says what to do next: add a few articles, plan your first session, invite your players, with a link to the right page of Help.
- Creating a world asks what it's for (games or writing) and whether you've run a game before. Both can be skipped and the first can be changed in World settings.
- On a phone, the start page no longer talks about folders: worlds are kept in the browser or your account.
Canopy v0.19
11 October 2026
- Links to a player's pages now include their campaign, so they open on the right page from a new tab, a bookmark or a reload, and Back no longer mixes up two campaigns.
- Players who only play see their campaigns first; making a world waits under "Make your own world".
- Game masters can show a played session's recap to their players as "Last time…" on their page.
Fixed since
- Secrets in GM notes can be shared on their own even when no campaign is Active: the notes offer to pick the campaign. The manual explains every way to share a secret.
Canopy v0.18
11 October 2026
- Coming back after a while: a "Where we are" card on the world's home page and the campaign page shows the next session, the last recap and what's parked, with one tap into the session.
- Beats can be skipped: they stay in the campaign in book order, folded away, and never hand anything out.
- Beats have an optional Source ("Ch5 p.122") for published adventures, only for the GM.
Canopy v0.17
11 October 2026
- A To write list gathers every name you've linked or pinned without writing it yet (from articles, GM notes, beats and research boards), with where it's mentioned and a Write it button. Find it in the sidebar and on the world's start page.
- Mentioned in on an article also lists the campaign beats, board pins and GM notes that use it, for the GM only.
- Pin many names at once on the research board with Add several…: one name per line, with an optional note after a comma.
Canopy v0.16
11 October 2026
- The Active campaign picker in the sidebar now says what it does, and a world with only one campaign has it Active by itself.
- Worlds in your account remember the Active campaign in your account, so it's the same on all your devices.
- On a phone, article pages show whether the Active campaign's players have them, with the share button under the title.
Canopy v0.15
11 October 2026
- New Article (plain page) and Handout (letters, maps and notes for players) templates; a new article starts with the template you used last on this device.
- Tapping next to an empty heading puts the cursor on the line below it, so your text no longer runs into the heading.
Canopy v0.14
11 October 2026
- Make your own themes: pick a typeface and five colours for light and dark, with a preview and readability warnings. Each theme is saved with the world as a Markdown file in themes/.
Canopy v0.13
11 October 2026
- Hand out… and Share on the Players tab find secrets by their title, and a name written down at the table goes in the scene just played.
- The Players tab says once which fields are left out for players, with a small marker on each article.
- Table mode stays on when you come back from a page opened from the session.
Canopy v0.12
11 October 2026
- A manual inside Canopy: Help in the World menu and "How Canopy works" on the start page, with nine chapters for game masters and writers and a search.
Canopy v0.11
11 October 2026
- Typing @ in beats, session recaps, GM notes and secrets now suggests articles and inserts a link, like the article editor.
- Typing [[ in the article editor also suggests articles.
Fixed since
- The To scale timeline no longer hides an event's name behind the next event's bar.
- Later passages are labelled the same way for dates and names: "Players see this from …" or "Players see this when you release “…”".
- A player's copy of the campaign no longer names what's held back until a later date.
- "GM only" in the editor no longer takes in the paragraph above or empties a Later passage.
- Editing an article without a template no longer makes it a Character.
- Reading leaves out empty template headings; the share control warns when players would get an empty page.
- Sharing from the Players tab asks who first.
- On phones and tablets, names in the session plan open in a sheet over it.
Canopy v0.10
11 October 2026
- Import a plain folder of Markdown notes, a zip or an Obsidian vault as a new world. Notes in subfolders come along, a folder like "Characters" gives its template, and you see a summary of what is imported and skipped first.
- Add notes from a folder or zip to the open world, from the World menu or Settings. Taken names get a number or are skipped, never overwritten.
- A note that starts with its own title as a heading no longer shows the title twice.
Canopy v0.9
11 October 2026
- Players can keep private notes: a notes page for the campaign and a note on each page they've been given, saved to their account and kept safe while offline.
- A player can choose to share a note with their game master, who sees it on the campaign's Players tab.
Canopy v0.8
11 October 2026
- Your typing is kept on this device while you write articles, GM notes, recaps and beats, and offered back after leaving without saving, a closed tab or a refused save.
- "Leave without saving?" says when your draft is kept.
Canopy v0.7
11 October 2026
- "Only for you" lines in secrets and articles: never shared with players, even when the secret or article is.
- Players no longer get fields naming articles they don't have, and the GM is told which fields are left out.
- The share button says what players get (summary, secret text, fields left out, "Hidden until"), with "See it as" a player.
- The editor says the Summary is seen by players.
Canopy v0.6
11 October 2026
- Hand things out from the session: an article, a secret or a passage, choosing who gets it before anything goes out, and take it back with one tap.
- Ticking a beat that hands something out asks first, with "Tick only".
- The share control numbers its sessions ("3. The ferryman's warning").
- Table mode puts the session on the whole screen on tablets and laptops.
Canopy v0.5
11 October 2026
The timeline, to scale:
- A To scale view next to the list: years run left to right, longer events are bars, campaigns show as spans, and "Now" is a line. Zoom from millennia to years, or fit it all.
- Lanes by kind, place, faction or perspective (the busiest twelve; the rest share one lane). Crowded lanes show dots, with names on hover.
- Add an event at a year: long-press (phone) or right-click (computer) a lane, or use "+ Event". Added in a place's lane, it happens there.
- Previous and next event buttons in the list.
- To scale uses the whole width of the screen, with lane names in a column on the left. Rows are roomier, and year labels never overlap.
- Pointing at an event shows its preview card (kind, date, summary), on the timeline and on article links everywhere. Any dated article's card now shows when it happens.
- Events can be shown as words ("Long ago") while still placed by their date, and can begin an era; the era's heading says what it began with.
Also:
- The sample world has a history to try all this on: a dozen events across both eras, a war with battles inside it, the elves' own view, and an event after the campaign's present day.
- Colons in the fields at the top of a note are fine now (
summary: The last battle: a winter under siege). Fields Canopy can't read as a whole are read line by line instead of being thrown away. - The sidebar's links no longer wrap ("Calendars and perspectives").
Canopy v0.4
11 October 2026
- A campaign opens on the session being played or up next, and older played sessions fold away.
- Write a name down at the table in one step: "Brannoc, ferryman" makes a short article and links it from the beat in play.
- The active campaign in the sidebar links straight to its next session.
- On wide screens, a side panel next to the sessions reads any article, the research board and the campaign notes without leaving the plan.
Canopy v0.3
11 October 2026
- The sidebar is tidier: its footer links moved into one World menu.
Fixed since
- The timeline links to its calendars and perspectives, and back.
Canopy v0.2
11 October 2026
- Long articles get a Contents box from their headings.
- The editor counts words and has a focus mode that hides everything but the writing.
Fixed since
- Canopy's address with "www" in front now forwards to canopy.quest, keeping the page you asked for.
Canopy v0.1
11 October 2026
The first numbered release: Canopy as it stands after its first round of testing with game masters and players.
- Worlds as Markdown (Obsidian-compatible), in a folder, the browser or your account; zip import and export.
- Templates, family trees with secret parentage, calendars with eras and perspectives, and a timeline with an era strip, go to a year, find and filter.
- Campaigns: research board, sessions and beats, shelf, handouts, held-back passages and campaign time, so players see only what they've been given.
- Player invites by link, a player page and a primer.
- Saves never overwrite a newer version from another device, and leaving the editor always asks first.
- A bar offers to reload when a new version of Canopy is out.
